Dan Mangan – Oh Fortune

Dan Mangan’s latest release Oh Fortune is everything you would expect it to be; filled with gentle melodies that ring of maturity and lamentation. Plus, of course the showcase of a variety in it’s instrumentation. There’s a bit of everything; some folk rock tunes, and then a few rockier tunes with a harder beat.
Despite the range of sound, the album doesn’t stray too far from the Dan Mangan signature stylings; complete raspy vocals and contemplative lyricisms.
The title track is nothing less than sweet. The song is simplistic and accented with powerful drum fills, and it is the perfect mid-point of the whole album.
Other notable tracks that will get your itunes juices a flowin’: “Post-War Blues”; with it’s upbeat tempo and catchy guitar riffs, not to mention it’s strategic manipulation of rises and falls. The last track, “Jeopardy” is beautifully sad. It’s lyrics, as the questions that fill a contemplative mind that seem to be answered by skillful melodies.
