Yukon Blonde Does B.C. Proud

Man, Yukon Blonde did this British Columbian proud. Even better, this Kelowna-ite was positively beaming after listening to the band’s latest EP, Fire//Water.
Yukon Blonde is one of a few B.C. bands really shining this autumn, especially with more interesting and eclectic EP’s and tours coming up.
As both the band and I are from the west coast (and the same town, Kelowna) I immediately felt connected to Fire//Water. But obviously, it was more than just hometown glory that had me hooked – the selection of four songs move seamlessly into each other, complimenting the soft but classic vocals of the members.
To me, the sign of a good band is if one can easily pick up the melody and lyrics, and hum along while listening. This is exactly what Fire//Water is, with the catchy harmonies but mixed with just enough of a folk sound to keep things interesting and test how well you know the piece.
“Choices” is one of my favourite songs off the EP, with heavier rock beats, while “Fire” really showcased Yukon Blonde’s strength as a band. Not many non-country groups can pull off a harmonica solo easily, but they did this perfectly with “Fire.” It’s those little sounds and details that make this EP special.
Fire//Water will be released world-wide on Dine Alone Records on October 11th, and is already available in Canada over at Nevado Records.
This album would be best enjoyed overlooking Lake Okanagan or at one of Yukon Blonde’s stops on their North America tour (Toronto: Lee’s Palace, October 14th).
