CMW 2013: Genny’s Must-See Canadian Acts
Ben Caplan & the Casual Smokers have been touring almost non-stop over the past year. Not only did he just win Rising Star Recording of the Year at the ECMAs, but also recently spoke with Jiam Ghomeshi on Q (and us!). With his roaring vocals, body-swaying worthy tunes and hilarious stage banter, this is a do-not-miss. Having seen Ben perform live, I can attest that this guy knows how to put on an entertaining show–you will not be disappointed.

The very first time I saw Imaginary Cities, it was summer of 2010 and NXNE was in full swing. I feel like nothing I say can do these guys (and gal) justice. What I can say is that after I saw Imaginary Cities that one evening, I saw them two more times during the festival. After sharing the stage and touring with the Pixies, Imaginary Cities seem to have been taking the music scene by storm–nationally and internationally. You just can’t go wrong with Marti’s raspy, yet entirely captivating vocals, Rusty’s musical know-how, and the jazzy-pop stylings of the band as a whole. Just go see them. Please.
Friday, 11:30PM @ Lee’s Palace
Teenage Kicks is one of those bands you have to see at least once. Granted, once that happens, you’ll keep wanting to see them every time they hit up your city. Having recently gone through a crazy ride and eventually losing a member, it seems that they are ready to hit the pavement running–full speed. This group of guys has amazing on-stage chemistry and goes all out for every performance. Don’t miss this.

I had the pleasure of seeing honheehonhee at last year’s CMW. If you’re looking for a straight up fun band to see live, these are your guys. Playing rock music that will get you sweating, this ball of energy band will keep you wanting more.
